Oral Pleasures: Reading Aloud in Old English and Latin
In this paper, I considered both the Anglo-Saxon pleasure in oral performance, and the pleasure medievalists can derive from the vocalization of Anglo-Saxon texts. I concentrated on prose, as this is a lesser-studied area. First I sketched out the current state of research on the oral aspects of prose texts, then moved on to some specific examples of the performance culture of Anglo-Saxon prose texts. Finally, I considered the practical implications for our scholarship of prose texts being read aloud, using the Encomium Emmae Reginae as a case study.
