Description

ndreas Krieg, a Middle-East expert at the School of Security of King’s College London, says Iran is playing a tactical game. “I don’t believe, and I don’t think anyone who’s a credible expert thinks, that the Iranians have made up their mind of what they want to do.”

With political uncertainty gripping Israel, the war with Hamas, the threat of a more serious conflict with Iran’s other proxy Hezbollah and the US election looming, the Middle East is in flux.

Dr Krieg notes that even if Iran were weeks from building a nuclear weapon, it lacks the missile technology to fire it.

Nonetheless, the fact Iran is close to being able to make a nuclear weapon and even launch it, is frightening. Almost 20 years ago, the 85-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei issued a fatwa against the production and use of nuclear weapons. These devices of mass destruction were judged haram or religiously forbidden.

“That position hasn’t changed and we expect if there is a change, it’s going to come with the next generation of leadership,” says Krieg. “
