However, Krieg said, the US is still leaving room for Israel to conduct operations in Rafah, such as via air strikes and special forces deployments – though the exact limits of such actions are unclear.

Netanyahu, who is concerned at all costs with maintaining a “victory narrative”, is likely to press on with a limited incursion in Rafah to “keep up the momentum as much as possible”, Krieg said.
