Favelas are considered to be places where drug-related crime, violence and lawlessness reign. Following the award of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, the Brazilian government therefore launched a large-scale program to "pacify" favelas located in strategic neighborhoods. What followed was a war-like confrontation between drug gangs and military police. At the invitation of the Geographical Society of Passau e.V., the internationally renowned Brazilian Vinicius de Carvalho, lecturer at King's College London, takes a critical look at the concept of "pacification" and its implementation in military police operations in the favelas of Rio. His lecture will be musically framed by the Sturmberger Feiertagsmusi, which will perform Brazilian music this evening.
