MILITARY SYSTEMS AND ETHICS IN THE PREHOSPITAL AND DISASTER ENVIRONMENT

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This presentation will discuss ‘military healthcare ethics’ in the contemporary military context. We will start by considering the debate between the ‘nature and character of war’ and whether current issues in ethics are genuinely new or enduring challenges. We will then define the relationships between law, ethics and morality; and consider the topic of ‘dual loyalty’ for military health professionals. We will note multiple references to military healthcare ethics in NATO doctrine, and recent publications by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation. We will then examine 4 specific topics, ‘medical rules of eligibility’, conduct of military medical units and personnel, treatment of prisoners of war, and medical research. Finally, we will discuss the use of scenario-based education in military healthcare ethics and introduce the King’s Centre for Military Ethics playing cards and smartphone App.
