I organised and gave a paper at this conference. The official blub for the event was: s part of King’s College London’s centenary commemoration of the Great War, the Institute of Contemporary British History is proud to announce its annual conference. The organisers are looking for a range of papers that consider the role of monarchies from around the world in the First World War and in subsequent conflicts. We hope that the conference will cover the diplomatic, political, military and social aspects of their roles, and would welcome comparative perspectives. Broad subject areas include but are not limited to the following: The influence of royal diplomacy in the build up to 1914; The constitutional position of monarchies and contribution of this to the path to war; Royals as military and diplomatic leaders and their social role within wartime society and propaganda in the European and non-European worlds; The place of dependent sovereigns and princes, such as the Indian princes or the Moroccan sultan, within the European colonial empires; The differences between royal-led powers and republican belligerents, particularly their views on one another; War-time revolutions and the end of monarchies; The changing role of royals in conflict as a result of the Great War to the present day; The role of royalty in wartime commemoration across the world.| Period | 27 May 2014 |
