Caring for Archives: Collaboration in Historic Film Festival Research
Festivals have been defined as verbal and visual architectures (Dayan, 2000, Damiens, 2020), forcing as to read (Dayan, 2000: 52) as we conduct film festival research. This is particularly the case in research on the pre-histories of festivals. They require a collaboration with a multiplicity of archives, from the festival themselves, to media archives as well as public and private archives. As we seek to examine “[h]ow exactly we got from there to here” (Kredell 2016: 15) along the festival history, it seems urgent to care for archives and to think of collaborative research methods to trace collectively the histories of film festivals. This workshop brings together scholars and practitioners to engage with the key question on this thematic conference and care: what does “care” allow us to protect and/or preserve? Through diverse case studies from across the world, we will share practices on how to conduct archival research to trace the origins of film festivals and of films in multi-disciplinary festivals. Christel Taillibert and John Wäfler will present the methodological principles of the quantitative perspective initiated to reflect on the prehistory and history of festivals before 1950, with the aim of constituting a working team on a European scale on the question. Estrella Sendra will then share diverse archives of the curation of film in the Premier Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres (First World Festival of Black Arts), hosted in Senegal.
