Observatoire de la biologie de synthèse

Activity: OtherTypes of External academic engagement - Contribution to the work of national or international committees and working groups

The Observatoire de la biologie de synthèse is a consultative group set up by the French Ministry of Research and Higher Education in January 2012 and coordinated by the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (CNAM). It aims to collect and disseminate information about the developing field of synthetic biology and its potential impact on society, and to catalyse upstream reflexion and dialogue with emerging publics. Membership includes representatives from relevant academic and industrial sectors, research funders, biosafety regulators, civil society NGOs and experts from social science and law. The establishment and remit of this body was substantially influenced by the report I co-authored for the Ministry in 2011, and this is stated explicitly on its website.
