Performing (post-)world music experimentalism in Berlin

Description

This paper is concerned with the intersection between musicians, curators, producers and policy makers in the context of experimental and electroacoustic music across Germany and the Arabic-speaking world. Exploring the German-Arabic music scene in Berlin and Mannheim, I argue that it is necessary to situate them on the basis of the local historical and socio-economic circumstances that contribute not only to musicians’ productive capacities, but their working identities. Using the examples of a new experimental network of bi-national and diasporic musicians in Germany, I look at the ways in which artists with kin and affective relations to the MENA regions have found ways to create opportunities from the stereotypical representation in media texts by creating multi-layered sound collages, multimedia performances and the sonic reclaiming of public space at (post-)-world music performance sites. This paper aims to challenge notions of neoliberal orientalism present in the study on Arab musicianship by offering an insight into experimental musical activities and affective encounters between musicians and curators that are not only able to disrupt public discourse, but engender new narratives on Arabness in Germany.
