Recompense for loss: contemporary veteran welfare

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This presentation summarised the evolution of Veterans welfare benefits in the UK during the 20th and 21st centuries. Although the process for recruitment and motivation of soldiers, sailors and aviators seeks a basis in societal values, these are not necessarily reflected in the State’s welfare provision to recompense for the social losses from exposure to combat suffered by Veterans. Veterans have had to wage a political battle to achieve acknowledgement of their losses, yet the human consequences of war are timeless. Are Veterans ‘super citizens’ or just political fodder?
