Teaching and learning prosody: challenges for the future teacher of English

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The processes involved in the activities of teaching and learning a foreign language, particularly its prosodic features, has been a source of controversy for a long time. On the one hand, students find it hard to understand the implications of the relationships inherent to the different prosodic subsystems and, on the other, teachers encounter difficulties in circumscribing the scope and reach to be attained in a course. This paper looks critically into these difficulties, into the different methodological trends currently used at university level and into the difficulties met and surmounted in the learning/teaching process from the student’s viewpoint.
