Description
“Sinwar and Netanyahu have the same interest in prolonging the war,” says Andreas Krieg, of the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies at King’s College London. “If you draw a Venn diagram, it’s hard to see where the overlapping interests are that would allow a pause and hostage swap.”
He notes that Hamas is not a unified organisation, making negotiations harder. Differences are emerging between Sinwar and the political leadership negotiating with Western and Middle Eastern officials in air-conditioned offices in Doha. “And the gap between these more moderate figures and those in Gaza is widening as communications are disrupted,” says Krieg.
