In this video, Dr Anna Maguire and Dr Alice Evans explain the history of the women’s suffrage movement and its relevance for gender equality today. Dr Anna Maguire, History, discusses key milestones and events in the suffrage campaign and explains how the movement began to spread and gather momentum in the 1860s and throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The Representation of the People Act in 1918 marked a significant moment – although the Act only allowed a select group of women to vote. Dr Alice Evans, International Development, discusses 4 key drivers of the movement across the world, examining the importance of seeing women in employment, social mobilisation to show people not to be despondent and that change is possible, political alliances and success in neighbouring states. Dr Evans explains how lessons from the suffrage movement relate to her research today in to ‘norm perceptions’ and global gender equality.
