“There is huge potential for the luxury industry in the GCC countries as locals in the Gulf have on average the highest disposable income in the world [and] spend extensively on luxury goods. Fashion is an important element of that,” says Andreas Krieg, associate professor of Security Studies and a Gulf expert at the Institute for Middle Eastern Studies at King’s College London.

There is an ongoing cultural transformation in Saudi, which has been perceived by some commentators as a soft power tactic to ease concerns about the country’s human rights record.
