Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

The objective of the session would be ‘to signpost for participants the key debates and conundrums for the ethical healthcare practice within military health systems’. The session would comprise short, 10 min, presentations by invited speakers on one the following topics. This would be followed by small group discussions for 5-10 participants from the audience on each of the topics (maximum of 5 groups, numbers dependant on the size of the audience). The session would close with each group presenting a short critique of each of the topics discussed. Each speaker has recently published one or more academic papers within the subject of military healthcare ethics.

Topics:
What is military healthcare ethics and why is it relevant in the 21st Century?
Ethical challenges in military operations, from anti-terrorism to large scale combat.
Ethical perspectives for non-deployed military healthcare policy and practice
Making ethical decisions in military practice, influence of battlefield conditions.
Emerging issues and technology in military healthcare ethics
Medical Ethics and Military Commanders, Decision making.,

This session would be deliberately designed to achieve a higher level of learning and audience engagement than the tradition conference approach of presenting a short academic paper with audience followed by questions and answers. The participants would also receive a short booklet to facilitate their further learning on the topics raised during the session.
