Organisation profile

We are a large department with over 50 academic and research staff. Our staff are dedicated to teaching and carrying out research. They have won international and national awards for their work and often appear in the media commenting on a range of topics.

The Geography Department at King's College provides a friendly and supportive environment for research and study. We have 350 undergraduates, more than 300 master's students and over 100 PhD students. Students on ourundergraduate or master's degrees learn in small groups as well as in lectures, practical workshops and seminars. Courses are taught by experts in their field, bringing cutting edge research into the curriculum. Field trips are an important aspect of the King's experience. We currently visit the USA, India, France and Morocco. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and consider topics from a variety of perspectives. PhD students benefit from working with leading scholars in their fields of research.

The Department's research combines both human and physical Geography and is policy focussed relating to modern environmental and urban issues. We have four main Research Groups: Cities GroupEarth and Environmental Dynamics GroupEnvironment, Politics & Development Group and Hazards and Risk Group. Each group has its own seminar series and reading groups. Students are encouraged to take part in these and other activities that take place in the Geography Department.
