The Urban Living Hub (ULH) strategically co-ordinates research activities across the Department of Informatics that address urban-related challenges by means of a portfolio project with partners from core sectors such as: energy, logistics, planning, pollution, transport, smart cities, culture and entertainment. There are three main themes of activity for the Urban Living:

• Services. To respond to the challenges of citizens, councils, cities, the nation and beyond. Specific areas of application within the hub are in the remit of Transportation, Telecommunication and Health. Current research comprises the use of AI for modelling and simulation, intelligent reasoning and planning, Visual Analytics for data analysis and development of bespoken applications, exploration and exploitation of 5G technologies.
• Security. To build resilience against potential harm without limiting progress. Specific areas of application within the hub are in the remit of Internet of Things (IoT) for smart cities and smart building, and socio-technical cyber-security. Current research comprises the use of formal methods for verification and validation of cyber-physical systems, data mining for anonymization and event detection, human factors of security for trust.
• Sustainability. To explore and foster opportunities for sustainable growth and concurrently assess risks. Specific areas of application within the hub are in the remit of Planning for Development1, Cities Economies and Welfare, Culture and Entertainment. Current research comprises the use of both data-driven and model-driven AI, data driven analytics, digital humanities for information extraction, archiving and consumption.

The three sectors are core components of Urban Living. The hub research across all sectors is both complementary and intertwined, and highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the hub building on research expertise from Informatics (AI, Data Science, Theoretical Computer Science) and Engineering (Robotics, Telecommunications) alike.
