Organisation profile

Summary

The creation of the Women’s Health CAG provided a springboard for reshaping and integrating women’s health clinical services, education and training, and research in our Trusts and King’s College London. Through the new Women’s Health Academic Centre, launched by the Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies in 2011, the CAG aims to provide the highest standards of care to the women of London and the South East, built on excellence in research, training and clinical skills.

Whilst the provision of maternity care (more than 11,000 deliveries per year) necessarily remains located at both the St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital sites, the CAG’s clinical performance group aims to exchange best practice, and common guidelines have been developed. Alignment of assisted conception, urogynaecology and fetal medicine services awaits the proposed merger of the Trusts to arrive at the best options for serving our community.

Notable achievements in research include expanding upon our expertise in maternity care to develop one of the largest obstetric research groups in Europe encompassing a centre for clinical trials, another for fetal medicine (the Harris Birthright Centre) and a strong translational research team. Importantly, through integration with the Perinatal Mental Health team at the Institute of Psychiatry, a new programme of research addresses the mental health needs of women during and immediately after pregnancy aiming to define optimal pathways of care.

The CAG has reviewed and revised its entire teaching programme in all aspects of reproductive health, notably the MBBS course and has developed the UK’s first Maternal and Fetal Health intercalated BSc.
