Adam Hasan is a clinician, scientist, educationalist, and statistician, holding degrees in each of these disciplines. He uses his unique combination of expertise to advance the quality of dental and statistical education through innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches. Adam is currently the Associate Dean for Assessment. He has been the academic lead for the General Dental Council’s Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) since 2014. Adam has publications in science, dental, and educational journals.
Adam obtained his BDS from United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas', University of London. He intercalated a BSc in the Anatomy Department enabling him to study developmental biology, connective tissues, fracture repair, and primatology. He completed his PhD in immunology, researching the rare, multisystemic condition Behcet’s disease, at Guy’s Hospital in 1996. He subsequently worked as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Immunology. Adam received a Certificate in Teaching Medicine and Dentistry in 1999. He became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2002. He was employed as a senior lecturer in periodontology at KCL from 2006-2018. He also has been the course organiser for medical graduates in periodontology since 2007.
Adam’s appointment in 2006 as chair of the Academic Quality Committee provided a means of combining his expertise with his passion to impact further the quality of dental education. His understanding that the disciplinary field of education held vital data, methodologies, and theoretical tools to refine his innovative approach led him to pursue and complete an MA in Academic Practice in 2009 from King’s College London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Online and Distant Education from the Open University in 2011. This increased expertise significantly impacted the quality of his contribution as the Part 1 lead in the Licence for Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons (England), which he held for over a decade, and as the academic lead for the General Dental Council’s Overseas Registration Examination (ORE).
Eager to facilitate greater depth of understanding in education, assessment, scientific, and clinical research, Adam earned a BSc (Mathematics and Statistics) from the Open University and a Graduate Certificate in Statistics from Birkbeck, University of London and in 2016. Adam then completed an MSc in Applied Statistics from Birkbeck, University of London in 2022 to continue developing his expertise in statistics and psychometrics. He continues to pursue research in assessment, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodology.
The unique combination of expertise in quantitative analysis and education, in addition to his scientific and clinical training, led to Adam’s appointment as Associate Dean for Assessment in 2016. He was promoted to Reader in Education and Statistics in the Faculty of Dentistry in 2018.
Adam completed a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language in 1998 which has greatly facilitated teaching abroad in Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand. He has been visiting Professor of Immunology at the University of Health Sciences, Phnom Penh, Cambodia since 1998. He was also external examiner for postgraduate programmes at the University of Hong Kong, and currently examines at undergraduate and all postgraduate levels. Adam is fluent in Khmer and has an interest in Old and Middle Khmer inscriptions.
