PhD title: "Analysing Petty Experiences of Corruption: the Case of bribery in the Egyptian Secondary Education Sector"

The main research question to be tackled is- "How do adult literacy levels, income level per household and state expenditure on education correlate to the actual local levels of bribery in the public secondary schools in three Egyptian governorates?"

This research is an empirical investigation of local governmental corruption in the public secondary education sector in Egypt. It will focus on the social, economic and political aspects of corruption, by exploring one form of petty corruption in Egyptian public secondary education sector; which is bribery. This is investigated in reflection on the phenomenon of private lessons. A major level of comparison will be made by widening the scope of the research to include three different Egyptian governorates to sufficiently represent the country with all its geographical, economic and social diversities. These will include the governorates of Cairo, Assiut and South Sinai. A mixed methods approach will be utilised using both quantitative and qualitative research tools, namely a survey questionnaire followed by semi-structured interviews. The main stakeholders that will be engaged in the study include students, teachers and parents. Based on this investigation, the study will produce a thorough analysis of a petty corruption incident occurring across the spectrum of local level administrations, represented by private lessons. The study will not only measure actual corruption occurrences but also will include complimentary insights by the stakeholders involved in the Education sector, to actually be able to reach a solid conclusion on how to actually curb this corrupt phenomenon.
