Accumulation by Simulation: In-vitro meat, food security and the materialisation of biopolitics
Member of the Environment, Politics and Development research group.
Alexandra’s academic interests are in food security, diffusion of innovations and alternative food production and consumption. Her PhD research utilises Foucauldian theory to explore the biopolitical dynamics of in-vitro meat development – a process whereby tissue engineering and stem-cell technology have been used to cultivate meat artificially in labs. The study aims to better understand the role of this innovation as a potential ‘magic bullet’ solution to global food security and many other environmental, moral and health-related quandaries.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
