Innate immune responses not only provide an important first line of defense against invading pathogens and tumors but also play a crucial role in preparing the adaptive immune system to specifically recognize and clear the undesired pathogen or tumour. The innate and adaptive immune system have long being considered to function independently from each other. However, recent evidence suggests that the overall outcome of immune responses depends upon the interplay between mediators of both these systems. Among the various cell-to-cell interactions that are thought to regulate the quality and intensity of adaptive immune responses, the attention of immunologists has recently been focused on natural killer (NK) – dendritic cell (DC) interactions, as DCs play a critical role in triggering and shaping T cell-mediated immunity. The aim of my research is to dissect the complex pathways that link the innate and adaptive immune systems to provide resistance to pathogens.
