Machine learning, medical image analysis, fair AI
Dr King received a BSc. (Hons) degree in Computer Science from Manchester University in 1989, an MSc. (with distinction) in Cognition, Computing and Psychology from Warwick University in 1992, and a PhD degree in Computer Science from Warwick University in 1997. He has been a postdoctoral researcher with the Computational Imaging Sciences Group and the Division of Imaging Sciences at King’s College London, working mainly on registration, image-guided interventions and soft-tissue modelling. From 2001-2005 he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science department at Mekelle University in Northern Ethiopia. Since 2006 he has worked in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences at King's.
Dr King's research focuses primarily on the use of machine learning and image analysis techniques to problems in medicine. A strong focus is on cardiac imaging, including cardiac MR and echocardiography. Work in this area has involved automated estimation of biomarkers for stratification of patients as well as automated diagnosis. Dr King has a strong interest in bias and fairness in artificial intelligence (AI), and how fair AI techniques can be developed and adapted to the medical context..
Education
Dr King is also an active teacher and has taught a wide range of computing subjects to undergraduate students. He currently teaches computing courses to students working in the biomedical sciences and has published three textbooks related to this area.
