Developing a risk-based and participatory approach to reducing the uncertainty in modelling climate impact on flood inundation

Research interests

The aim of this project is to develop a novel approach to dealing with uncertainty in flood inundation modelling for climate impact assessment that explicitly considers the consequences as well as the probability of extreme flood events. Combining state-of-the-art uncertainty estimation techniques, high resolution predictions of future flooding, existing socio-economic datasets and social scientific methods of stakeholder engagement, this project will attempt to explore and reduce the uncertainty in the flood inundation modelling component of the climate impact projections by:          

  1.               exploring the sensitivity of flood inundation extent to the combined effects of uncertainties in climate predictions, flood model output and different ‘calibration’ and model assessment techniques            
  2.               developing priority pixel risk-based calibration methods, integrating the consequences and probability of future inundation            
  3.               engaging with stakeholders to identify consequences of particular concern and deliberate on the fitness for purpose of different risk-based calibration schemes both for current and climate impact assessment of flood risk.
