European foreign, security and defence policy, including the role knowledge/intelligence; foresight, early warning and conflict prevention; constructivist approaches in international relations, especially strategic culture, norms, persuasion and learning, risks and intelligence; international political communication, especially media and violent conflict and European integration.

Christoph Meyer is Professor of European & International Politics at King’s College London as well as Vice-Dean Research of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Public Policy. He has written widely on issues relating to European foreign, security and defence policy, focusing in particular on the question of changing strategic cultures in Europe, threat perceptions and counter-terrorism, as well as the communication and perception of warning intelligence as part of major grant from the European Research Council (2008-2011). He is the PI (CoI Mike Goodman) on an ESRC-funded project on learning in European foreign policy in an era of surprise (INTEL). He has completed as CoPI a major EU-funded research project on the media and violent conflict (www.infocore.eu), in which he investigated the role of NGOs in shaping media coverage of conflict. Prof Meyer has published in leading journals in IR and political science, including (2016) Over- and Under-reaction to Transboundary Threats: Two Sides of a Misprinted Coin?’ (Journal of European Public Policy), ‘The Purpose and Pitfalls of Constructivist Forecasting: Implications of Strategic Culture Research for the European Union’s Evolution as a Military Power’ (International Studies Quarterly, 2011), Forecasting, Warning and Responding to Transnational Risks (Palgrave, 2011) and The Quest for a European Strategic Culture: Changing Norms on Security and Defence in the European Union (Palgrave, 2006), and Warning about War: Conflict, Persuasion and Foreign Policy (CUP, 2019).

Christoph Meyer studied political science and sociology in Hamburg before completing an MPhil (1997) and a PhD in International Relations at the University of Cambridge in 2001. Afterward he worked as a visiting researcher at the Max Planck-Institute for the Study of Societies, Research Associate at the University of Cologne, Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre of European Policy Studies in Brussels, and Lecturer at the Birkbeck College London before joining King’s in 2007. At King's he was the first Head of the new Department of European & International Studies between 2011-2015 and is serving since October 2016 as the first Vice-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy.
