Research interests

I am currently working on the project, "Modelling Between Digital and Humanities: Thinking in Practice" (http://modellingdh.eu/). This project examines modelling and its processes as a formal and informal strategy of reasoning across interdisciplinary boundaries. It aims to bridge the disciplines through ideas and practices of modelling in teaching and practice, and seeks to reach out from our starting point in the digital humanities to inform and provide benefits to other disciplines and scholarly traditions. This project is funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung.

I previously worked on the Leverhulme-funded corpus linguistic project, "'People,' 'Products,' 'Pests' and 'Pets': The Discursive Representation of Animals." This project investigated how animals are represented and what the different orientations and stances to those creatures are in a wide-range of written and transcribed texts published from 1995-2015 (https://animaldiscourse.wordpress.com/).

My research interests are in contemporary speculative fictions, particularly as they relate to climate change and human animal relationships. I am interested in literature and science, corpus linguistics and the digital humanities, the environmental humanities and human-animal studies. I am the editor of the Science Fiction Research Association's SFRA Review and the sub-editor of the Medical Humanities blog.
