Dr. Dominic Balog-Way is a postdoctoral Research Associate at the King’s Centre for Risk Management, King’s College London. His interdisciplinary research examines the governance of risks (assessment, management and communication) to human health and the environment in North America and Europe. Dominic is particularly interested in technological risks such as those associated with pharmaceuticals, food safety, climate change, and healthcare, as well as major scientific issues relating to big data, evidence-based policymaking, and transparency. Amongst other activities, he is carrying out a Wellcome Trust-funded project exploring the use of big data and quality indicators in the healthcare sector by comparing the experiences of 31 high-income OECD countries that include the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. He is also conducting risk perception and communication research on the relation between public trust and its consequences for behaviour and, separately, how old age influences risk perception and decision-making. He has previously led international policy-oriented research projects in a wide range of sectors and presented his work across Europe and North America at government authorities, international societies, and major universities (e.g. Cornell, Cambridge, George Washington). He is Chair of the Risk Policy & Law speciality group at the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) and member of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE). For his PhD, Dominic carried out comprehensive theoretical and empirical research on the impact and effectiveness of government transparency policies, with an emphasis on the global pharmaceutical sector and the European Medicines Agency. He holds a Master of Science in Risk Analysis (Distinction) and Bachelor of Arts in Geography (First Class) both from King’s.
