Biographical details
Duraid has worked at the Defence Studies Department since September 2017, where he also undertook and completed his PhD in Defence and Security Studies.
He teaches across a range of intermediate and advanced courses on subjects ranging from international security trends, military ethics, leadership theory, and military strategy, to the International System, terrorism and asymmetric threats, and defence and foreign doctrine.
Prior to entering academia, Duraid worked in the private sector as an organiser and consultant for education and training courses, lectures, conferences and exhibitions in the security and defence sector, engaged with organisations such as the US Military Training Mission, USAFCENT, Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces, Brazilian Navy, UAE Armed Forces, Nigerian Armed Forces, and the UK MoD.
He is actively involved in military educational outreach and reform activities both individually and as a member of the King’s Centre for Military Education Outreach (CMEO) and the International Society of Military Sciences (ISMS).
Research interests
Duraid’s research focuses on the education of military and civilian officials within the security sector, in areas such as the development of cross-cultural pedagogies and curricular reform, issues of socialisation and soft power, and enhancing sustainability and resilience in the security profession.
His doctorate, entitled “Educating Strategic Leaders”, represents the first large-scale international study on the needs and preferences of students in joint strategic-level security and defence colleges, and the impact of students’ educational, linguistic, professional, cultural and political backgrounds upon these needs and preferences.
