Research interests

The main focus of Elle’s research is Lord Walter Rothschild and the development of his zoological museum at Tring. Her research engages with a number of themes including the history of science, collections, museums and scientific periodicals. Taking Rothschild and his zoological enterprise - his museum, collection, journal and network of collectors- as its central focus, Elle’s research examines the ways in which multiple kinds of natural historical practice – collecting, journal production and museum building – could be used both independently and in conjunction with one another, to create natural historical knowledge.

Elle's previous research has focused largely on the Victorian animal trading networks, in particular the role of Charles Jamrach and his impact upon the animal trade.
