Research interests

My research focuses on adeno-associated virus (AAV), an intriguing human parvovirus which displays features that are unique among DNA viruses.  In addition, AAV has become a frontrunner as a vector for human gene therapy based on results from a number of clinical trials. Although AAV is the most commonly used vector, there are limitations due to its restricted biological activity and the challenge with respect to commercial manufacturing.  Owing to its complex life cycle and dependence on helper viruses, molecular insights into viral replication are essential for the development of vectors with increased bioactivity and production schemes that promise maximal output. My laboratory aims to provide the critical link between basic AAV research and AAV gene therapy.
