Federico Bonaddio

Federico obtained a BA degree in French and Spanish from Bristol University in 1986. He went on to complete an MA in Spanish at Leeds University the subsequent year and was awarded a PhD by the same institution in 1992. He wrote his PhD thesis on the poetry of Federico García Lorca, focusing on the poet’s self-conscious production and relating his work to Modernist preoccupations and aesthetic modes. His first teaching position was at Glasgow University in 1991 and he held positions at Aberdeen University and Hull University after that. He was appointed to King’s in 1998

Federico has published on, amongst other things, the poetry of Federico García Lorca and popular Spanish cinema. He adopts a distinctly metapoetic approach to Lorca’s poetry and is generally interested in the difficulties inherent in creative processes. Amongst his publications are the monograph Federico García Lorca: the Poetics of Self- Consciousness (Tamesis, 2010) and the edited volume A Companion to Federico García Lorca (Tamesis, 2007). He is also co-editor of Words in Action. Essays in Honour of John Butt (special edition of Bulletin of Spanish Studies 83.1 [2006]), to which he contributed a characteristically self-conscious essay on a poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez. He also co-edited the volumes Crossing Fields in Modern Spanish Culture (Legenda, 2003) and Siete ensayos sobre la cultura posfranquista (University of Aberdeen, 1995). He contributed a chapter to the book Spanish Popular Cinema (Manchester University Press, 2004) entitled ‘Dressing as foreigners: historical and musical dramas of the early Franco period’ and has devoted an article to two film versions of the Machado brothers’ play, La Lola se va a los puertos (Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, 80 [2003], 69-82). He is currently working on cultural responses to Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy.
