I am working on the history of the twentieth-century perfume industry, focusing on Europe and the United States. In particular, I am examining the production and technical side of the business and how this was affected by the rise of synthetic chemistry. I am also looking at the history of olfactory science in the same period. My research interests include links between fashion, specialised expertise and business, relations between industry and academia, the history of the senses, of the chemical industry and of commodity production.
