Professor, Chief Scientific Officer- The Start Up Funding Club
Professor Luigi G Martini, BSc (Hons), PhD, FRPharmS, MBA
He is Professor of Pharmaceutical Innovation at King’s College London and Chief Scientific Officer of The Start Up Funding Club which has invested over £3 Million pounds in over 30 Start Ups. Professor Martini is the UK’s first and only Industrial Pharmacist teaching practitioner providing an important link between Industry and Academia.
His research interests cover the areas of personalised medicine, drug delivery and medical device engineering, where he advises a number of spin-out organisations and regulatory agencies in Europe and in the Middle East. Recently, acting as a respondent to the European Parliament on drug shortages.
Prior to joining King’s, Professor Martini was Senior Director of Pharmaceutical Development for Emerging Markets at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) where he was responsible for developing affordable medicines for the BRIC economies.
At GSK, Professor Martini implemented the development of the DiffCORE technology which was used for the Lamictal XR once a day product.
Professor Martini is a Pharmacist and received his PhD in Drug Delivery from the University of Manchester. Professor Martini obtained his MBA with Distinction from the University of Liverpool, specialising in SME business failures and success.
Professor Martini was made visiting Professor at John Moores University of Liverpool in 2006 and designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2008. Professor Martini was appointed a member of the REF2014 sub-panel for Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing and Allied Healthcare professionals in 2011. Professor Martini has 10 patents and over 40 papers published in the field of Drug Delivery, Formulation and Innovative technologies.
Ultrasonic processing technology to fabricate medical devices and pharmaceutical dosage forms, the design of dosage form concepts for delivering personalised medicines and developing drug delivery systems. Professor Martini is a member of the REF2014 sub-panel for Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Healthcare Professionals since 2011.
