Research interests
I am a musicologist and cultural historian who works on music of the eighteenth century and classical period. In particular, I am interested in Mozart biography, music in mid-to-late eighteenth-century London, and music and material culture (including portraiture and iconography).
I completed my AHRC-funded PhD in 2016, supervised by Professor Cliff Eisen. My thesis reassesses the fifteen months the Mozart family spent in London from April 1764 – July 1765. Using Leopold Mozart's letters and travel notes, I explore the social, cultural and intellectual networks the family encountered during their stay. I consider how Leopold formed these networks, how they functioned, and the interrelationships among them in an effort to ascertain how the Mozarts’ musical activities intersected with wider intellectual and cultural circles; whether this affects existing views of their European tour; and the possible implications this may have for current perceptions of eighteenth-century musical life in London as well as Mozart biography.
I blog about my research at hannahmtempleton.wordpress.com

Public Engagement
In January 2016 I designed and led primary school research afternoons on the Mozart Family's European travels, in conjunction with Classical Opera and the Victoria and Albert Museum. These workshops were part of Classical Opera's Mozart 250 project, and took place in the V&A's recently opened European Galleries.
I acted as a researcher, consultant and contributor to BBC Four's documentary Mozart's London Odyssey, presented by Dr. Lucy Worsley (first broadcast 21st June 2016).
In 2014, I contributed forty biographical entries to The Mozart Project (Pipedreams Media), the first fully interactive iBook on Mozart.
