    Research interests

    Islam is a Cardiology registrar and clinical research fellow in Cardiac MRI doing a PhD at King’s College London with Prof. Eike Nagel and Dr Amedeo Chiribiri.

    Dr Mahmoud research interests are cardiovascular risk factor management and discovery of myocardial ischaemia in different cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, hypertensive LVH and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy using quantitative perfusion imaging techniques. He is also interested in new methods of tissue characterization using T1 mapping as biomarkers of early cardiovascular injury. He shares work on standardization and validation of novel imaging methods for clinical use.

    Islam completed his undergraduate medical degree at Suez Canal University, Egypt (one of worldwide pioneers in problem solving based education system) in 2001, as one of the top graduate of the year. He was distinguished by several awards during his study. 

    Islam got his core medical and cardiology training in Suez Canal University teaching hospitals in Egypt (2002 to 2007) and during this period he got a Master of Science degree in Cardiovascular Medicine and gained the expertise in conduction of clinical research. Then he got an academic position as assistant lecturer in Cardiology at Suez Canal University-Egypt in 2007.

    Islam got some experience in interventional cardiology during his training in Egypt and through a fellowship at the Glenfield Hospital, Leicester under Prof. Anthony Gershlick in 2011 and he has a substantial role in securing a grant of £450.000 from the NIHR EME Programme for a randomised clinical trial on the best managemnt strategie to deal with Micro-Vascular Obstruction during Primary-PCI using intrcoronary infusion of Adenosine or Sodium Nitroprusside and using CMR to assess for micrvascular obstruction and the infarct size after Primary PCI.

    Islam has also experience in cardiac adult congenital and non congenital MRI and cardiac CT scanning through his fellowship at King’s College London over the last 2 years (2012-2014). He took part in different research projects duringhis stay at KCL.
