Biographical details

Jingan Young 楊靜安 is an award-winning playwright,  journalist, producer and editor.  She is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Film Studies at King’s College London. In October 2018, she transferred to writing up status for submission in 2019.

Her research focuses on the cinematic representations of the area of London’s Soho in post-war British cinema. Her thesis ‘Soho on Screen’ is supervised by Dr. Mark Shiel and Dr. Lawrence Napper at King’s College London.

In September 2018 she was shortlisted (1 out of 5 finalists) for the Women of the Future Awards 2018 in the Arts & Culture Category. The winner will be announced at the ceremony in November 2018. She is curator and editor of  ‘Foreign Goods: A Selection of Writing from British East Asian Artists’, published by Oberon Books. It includes her own play I’m Just Here to Buy Soy Sauceand a foreword by David Henry Hwang. It is the first British East Asian collection published in the UK.

She also is co-founder of the Cities in Crisis Network which held its first symposium in 2017. Publications include upcoming journal articles (Jewish Film and New Media, 2019), a chapter in a book on foreign filmmakers (UCL) and has contributed chapters on books about theatre (Scenes from a Revolution, Pluto Press).

She is a regular contributor for the South China Morning Post, Guardian, Exeunt Magazine, Coconuts HK, Nylon Magazine, Soho Clarion, The London Review of Books and Hong Kong Free Press.
