Biographical details

After achieving a distinction in the MA ‘English: 1850 to the present’ at King’s College London, Jo was awarded the Collaborative Doctoral Award ‘Charles Dickens and Literary Mapping,’ based at King’s College London and the Museum of London, and funded by the AHRC.  Timed to coincide with Dickens’s bicentennial celebrations in 2012, the project has allowed Jo to develop her thesis in conjunction with events at the Museum of London, including their major exhibit ‘Dickens and London.’  This has enabled Jo to carry out original research with the public, and has also given her exciting opportunities to work with the Museum of London in the development of the app Dickens: Dark London.

A strong interest in urban studies led Jo and Simon Vickery, another PhD candidate at King’s, to successfully establish a reading group in the English department called City-Centric.  The group is about to enter its second year, and attracts both scholars from a variety of disciplines as well as professionals working in urban planning.  A City-Centric conference is planned for 2014.

In 2013 Jo was awarded a three-month AHRC-funded Research Fellowship at the Huntington Library in LA.  This has given Jo the opportunity to engage in archival research, and develop her ideas through participation in events run by scholars at the Huntington Library.

Jo hopes to submit her thesis, entitled ‘Charles Dickens and Creative Damage,’ in September 2014.
