Personal profile

Research interests

My research focuses on the health effects of environmental stressors, mainly outdoor air pollution. I have coordinated a EU network which provided European wide results on the short-term effects of air pollution (the APHEA network) and participated in projects investigating exposure to air pollution (e.g. EXPOLIS), gene-environment interactions (e.g. AIRGENE),air pollution effects in sensitive sub-populations (e.g. RUPIOH), health impact assessment (e.g. APHEKOM).

I am also interested in other environmental exposures and their health effects,  such as noise (e.g participation in the HYENA project) and climate related exposures and the interactions between these exposures (projects PHEWE, EuroHEAT and CIRCE). Currently I am involved in the investigation of long-term effects of air pollution (I participate in the ESCAPE project as Partner PI), the effects of ozone on children’s respiratory health, the effects of source-specific particles on health (such as forest fires and desert dust), and the short-term effects of PM2.5 and ultrafine particles in Europe.
