Biographical details

Dr. Fernández de la Cruz has been interested in clinical research since the beginning of her undergraduate studies. Upon completion of her Psychology degree in 2004, she enrolled for the MSc in Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology in Children and Adolescents (2004 – 2006) at the Clinic Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. It was during this program that she developed a special interest in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its related conditions. After this period, she started her residency in Clinical Psychology at the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa. During her three-year training (2007 – 2010), she started her PhD in the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2008 – 2009). In 2010, she had the opportunity to work, for a three-month period, as a visiting researcher at the OCD and Related Disorders Group at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. During this time, she was involved in a number of research projects. After finishing her Clinical Psychology training, she was awarded a two-year advanced training fellowship (2010 – 2012) by the Alicia Koplowitz Foundation, which enabled her to return to the Institute of Psychiatry. During her time there, she joined the OCD and Related Disorders research team, and also the clinical team at the National and Specialist Clinic for Children and Adolescents with OCD and Related Disorders. After completion of her training fellowship, she became a Research Assistant within the same teams and had the opportunity to continue carrying out research in the area of OCD and its related conditions, focusing specifically in Hoarding Disorder. Her link with both the research and the clinical teams at the Maudsley gave her the opportunity to work on different research studies that resulted in several scientific publications, some of which were included in her PhD dissertation, which she defended in July 2013. Currently, she is a Post-Doctoral Researcher within Dr. Argyris Stringaris' Mood and Development Lab at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, where she is leading a project assessing treatment outcomes in routine clinical practice in children and adolescents. At the same time, she is highly involved in a number of projects, including the piloting of a brief group intervention for carers of people with Hoarding Disorder and a randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.
