My main research interests are in pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacogenetics, genetic epidemiology of complex traits (particularly ethnic differences in disease risk) and the analyses of electronic health records including methodological applications. I am the main coordinator of the EUDRAGENE project (European case-control collaboration to study genetic susceptibility to adverse drug reactions) and have experience conducting and developing methodologies for a number of epidemiological studies, including diabetes and hypertension in African populations.
I have successfully launched 2 CRN studies with support from the NIHR: 1. Portfolio study 5846: Environmental and Genetic Determinants of SLE. This project has been co-adopted at a national level by the NIHR Musculoskeletal Speciality group. 2. Portfolio study 4412. “UK Component of EUDRAGENE: Studying the pharmacogenetics of selected ADRs”, and welcome new collaborations in these areas.
I have received funding from the Department of Health (NCCRCD) for research into adverse drug reactions using primary care data, where preliminary work on selected ADRs and drug classes is ongoing. I am working together with Prof. Johan van der Lei (NL) and Prof Miriam Sturkenboom (NL) through the EU-ADR and ARITMO projects on drug safety, with EU FP7 support. I have also received funding from the Serious Adverse Events Consortium (SAEC) an international collaboration of academia and industry supported by the Wellcome Trust to study genetic determinants of drug induced liver injury and serious skin rash together with Prof. Ann Daly (Newcastle) and Prof. Munir Pirmohamed & Ana Alfirevic (Liverpool) and EUDRAGENE collaborators, where we are currently conducting GWAS and next generation sequencing studies (2016/7). EUDRAGENE is also collaborating with the CHARGE Consortium to determine genetic predictors of statin associated rhabdomyolysis and studies of agranulocytosis with SWEDEGENE (2016/7). Current areas of work include developing methods for risk prediction in pharmacoepidemiological and pharmacogenetic studies.
I am involved with undergraduate and post graduate teaching in medicine, epidemiology and genetics. I am an accredited member of the ILT (Institute for Learning and Teaching) and a GP appraiser.
