Research interests

Matthew Hotopf is Executive Dean at the Institute of Psychiatry Psychology & Neuroscience and former Director of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust National Institute of Health Research Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). He is Professor of General Hospital Psychiatry and a consultant liaison psychiatrist.   Matthew was trained in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and in Psychiatry at the Maudsley.  Matthew’s main area of research is in the grey area between medicine and psychiatry, exploring the interaction between mental and physical health.  He has worked extensively in areas where mental health relates to other walks of life – including occupational and military health, mental health law, and the wider community.  He is an emeritus NIHR Senior Investigator, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.  He was awarded a CBE for services to psychiatric research in the Queen's 2018 Birthday Honours.
