Mez Dubois-Van Slageren

My research interests are the performance of music that has come to be called 'musical heritage', and the transmission of oral traditions in the context of migration. My main focus at the moment is on Arabic musical heritage, particularly Syrian, and the song-form muwashshah, although more broadly my research includes Egypt and the Syrian migrants in Turkey as well. I aim to highlight contemporary practice of muwashshahat and engagement with this musical heritage, also in the context of migration due to the Syrian conflict and the resulting breakdown in prevailing social structures for transmission of oral musical traditions.
