My PhD project focuses on the educational experience of 16-19 year-olds in London. Drawing on Amartya Sen's 'capability approach', it explores issues of freedom and opportunity for students to prepare for life after school during the post-16 phase. In this vein, the project argues for a break away from human-capital models of education, and their focus on credentialisation, in favour of a human development framework that accommodates training and qualifications within a broader conception of 'student preparedness'. The study builds a theoretical framework for applying a capability approach to post-16 education alongside an empirical study in London to investigate its uses.

This project draws on interests in Philosophy and Ethics (BA, MA) and Education Policy and Research Methodologies (MRes), and the vocational experience accrued in a large inner-city state school in London, working with 16-19 year-olds.

It explores intersects between:

  • Philosophy of education
  • School-leaver transitions
  • Student (under)prepardness
  • Social decency & dignity
  • Insititutional ethics
  • Post-16 education policy and reform

Research interests (short)

My PhD project draws on Amartya Sen's 'capability approach' to challenge traditonal understandings of post-16 education. It explores philosophical questions, such as the role of dignity and autonomy in better-preparing young people for life after school, alongside an empirical study of capability development during the post-16 phase.

It explores intersects between:

  • Philosophy of education
  • School-leaver transitions
  • Student (under)prepardness
  • Social decency & dignity
