Dr Patricia Zunszain

Research interests

Dr Zunszain has a strong interest in the formative development of students and researchers, both academically and as individuals, and develops initiatives to support their wellbeing and mental health. She is Faculty Senior Tutor (Student experience) and NIHR Maudsley BRC PGR Education & Skills LeadHer latest initative is the design and implementation of one of the first service-learning modules within the University, where she is now Academic Lead for Service Learning.

Her lab-based research has focused on elucidating underlying mechanisms of mood disorders. She used cellular models to mimic brain function as well as saliva and blood clinical samples to study different psychiatric disorders in collaboration with other teams, looking for biomarkers that can follow disease and predict response.  She has a particular interest in the role of inflammation and stress in depression, and is studying the role of oxidative stress as a model to describe molecular changes underlying depression as well as neurodegeneration.
