Dr Pier-Giorgio Masci is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Imaging Department at King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He brings over two decades of clinical and academic experience in advanced cardiovascular imaging, heart failure, acute coronary syndrome and cardiomyopathy.
Dr Masci completed his full clinical training in cardiology in Italy, with a dedicated specialisation in interventional cardiology and cardiac pacing. In 2006, he was awarded the European Society of Cardiology Fellowship, enabling him to join the cardiac MRI group led by Professor Bogaert at the University of Leuven, Belgium. His research culminated in a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2015, with a focus on cardiac MRI in acute myocardial infarction.
From 2007 to 2014, Dr Masci served as a Senior Researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) in Italy, working at the country’s largest cardiac MRI centre. During this time, he developed and led research on heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy. He also gained extensive clinical expertise managing patients with advanced heart failure, temporarily leading the Cardiovascular Medicine Department three months each year.
In 2015, Dr Masci joined the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland, contributing to translational imaging research in collaboration with Professors Schwitter and Stuber. Since 2019, he has been based at King’s College London, where he combines clinical work with research interests in valvular heart disease (particularly mitral valve prolapse), heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, ageing and data science.
Dr Masci remains actively involved in European collaborative research and is committed to advancing cardiovascular imaging to improve patient clinical decision-making and clinical outcome prediction.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
