Research interests
Simon’s research focuses on the interstices between media industries and media consumers and the technological means by which that gap is bridged. His doctoral thesis aimed to uncover what the fungibility of capital, as demonstrated through the mechanism of ‘word-of-mouth’, reveals to us about the audience’s changing relationship to contemporary Hollywood film industrial dynamics. In doing so, it contributed to a more thorough critical examination of an emerging trend in contemporary Hollywood cinema whereby word-of-mouth on social media is enabling the film audience to exert a greater impact on contemporary Hollywood film financing, marketing, distribution, and exhibition processes than ever before.
