Former student
Project Title: Uruguayan Theatre in Translation: Performability, Mobility and Intercultural Dialogue
End date: 1/04/2017
Sophie's primary research interests are Latin American theatre, translation and performance. Her PhD, completed in 2016, investigated key questions of performability, playability and translatability to explore the creative process of the translation of dramatic texts from Spanish into English, with a view to performance in the UK. Her corpus was formed of Uruguayan plays and she completed translations of Punto y Coma (Ready or Not) by Estela Golovchenko, Bailando sola cada noche (Dancing Alone Every Night) by Raquel Diana and La biblioteca (The Library) by Carlos Maggi. She has a keen interest in education and a key aspect of her doctoral research involved developing a methodology for theatre translation workshops to allow students to develop tools for cultural inquiry.
