Emotional Exchanges: The Affective Transformations of Object, Play and Audience in Early Modern Drama
This thesis will extend the scope of current materialist criticism to consider how a theatrical object can engage with and alter those emotional identities created in the play and manifested in the audience. Such exchanges will be revealed as transformational for the object itself, exposing the subjectivity of even its material meanings. By studying the treatment of different objects both in the texts and in the contexts of their multi-temporal performance histories, this thesis will expose the inherently symbiotic relationship that exists between the audience and the object’s continually developing emotional identities.
The importance of recognising such a connection will be demonstrated by considering the theatrical treatment of the object and subject’s mutually affective relationship as part of a broader scientifically-driven recognition of the physicality of both mind and body. This returning appreciation for the physical basis of emotion will be used to evidence the wider cultural significance of including both emotional subject and object in the materialist critical focus.
