Biographical details

Tobias Biedermann is a final year PhD student in the Lau China Institute at King’s College London, as well as a former seminar leader in the Department of War Studies, also at King’s. His research focuses on politics and society in China and the region as well as nationalism. Prior to his PhD-studies at King’s, Tobias studied Chinese, Asian and International Studies in Bonn, Reykjavik, Shanghai and Hong Kong. His current PhD-research is a comparative study which looks at how and why Chinese university students learn and express nationalist sentiment

Research interests

Tobias' main research interest remains in the field of Chinese politics and society and in the theory of nation and nationalism. In his research he particularly looks at university students as the main key category of analysis and examines where, why and how Chinese students learn and express nationalism both tacitly and explicitly. His future research is to build on the foundations of nationalism in China and comparing it to other countries in the region.
