Biographical details

Trevor Coward (TC) is Reader and Consultant in Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Rehabilitation and has over 35 years of experience with rehabilitating patients with facial/body prostheses. He has  a national and international reputation as a Maxillofacial Prosthetist, an educator and an innovative researcher. He is committed to rehabilitating patients with facial defects and deformity from cancer, trauma and congenital malformations. TC formed the Academic Centre of Reconstructive Science (ACRS) in 2015 which combined both academic and NHS clinical service to provide translational research that directly relates to the clinical practice of ACRS. TC has developed unique MSc programmes for prosthetists and students come from all around the world to KCL. ACRS has been recognised as a national/international training centre for Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists and recognised as a centre of excellence in this specialty. TC’s research contribution includes publications, grants, research contracts and academic collaborations within KCL, other craniofacial centres within the UK, and with overseas partners (i.e. University of Alberta, CA – Research fellow; University of Illinois, USA; Hong Kong University- Hon Clinical Professor; Oklahoma State University, USA; Pune, India; Brescia, Rome, Italy).

Research interests

TC’s research interests fall into two main areas much of which is translational researchthat has been adapted for use in the NHS. The main focus of TC’s research is based upon the use of digital technology in the planning and provision of facial prostheses. This includes CT, MRI, Laser scan data and more recently stereophotogrammetry used in conjunction with CAD/CAM techniques to produce anatomical facial /body parts in silicone. A second area of interest is Computerised Colour Formulation & Spectrophotometry. A spectrophotometer used in conjunction with a computerised colour formulation software permitted the intrinsic pigments and quantity of each pigment to be identified in natural skin and provide a range of basic shades in silicone to simulate the colour of various ethnic skin colours He has published 48 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is a clinical research fellow at the world renown Maxillofacial Centre in Edmonton, Canada and more recently was made a Honorary Clinical Professor at Hong Kong University Prince Philip Dental hospital for his research in maxillofacial prostheses.
